I've never seen a socket explode, I've only seen them crack or just wear a 
lot.  In my dad's garage we always used standard Snap-On sockets for impact 
wrench use.  We rarely cracked one but over time they would loosen up a bit. 
Impact sockets were thicker and frequently wouldn't fit in tight spaces so 
we didn't use them much.  A lot of the cheaper brand sockets were pretty 
thin and could be cracked pretty easily with an impact wrench.

I'm not a fan of air ratchets but I've been around a couple.  I don't think 
they have enough impact to damage any decent socket.
