Hello Paul,
   I've attached may radios that way.  Unfortunately,
some PO has replaced the shaft-mounted radio and cut a
DIN size opening.  With those puppies, the radio cage
does all the supporting.  I have considered adding a
strap fron the rear of the cage up to one of the
courtesy light mounting screws.  That way, I make no
more changes (read: drill no new holes) but add some
rigidity to the cage/radio mount.
