Take the plugs out and turn the engine with your thumb over No.1 plug hole. 
On the compression stroke your thumb will be lifted off the hole, when the 
piston is at the top of that stroke that is TDC for No.1  For the purposes 
of reconnecting the plug leads, that is.  But if you mean accurate TDC for 
timing purposes you need a stop screwed into No.1 (or No. 4) plug hole, turn 
the engine one way until the piston just touches the stop and mark the 
pulley in line with the TDC pointer, then turn the engine the other way 
until the piston contacts the stop and mark again.  Timing TDC is between 
the two marks.
