[Mgs] TD Gearbox problem

My brother has been looking at a TD for sale and noted the transmission pops
out of gear.  He didn't say in what gear this happens.  My question is: what
are the likely cause(s) of this and what's involved in the the cure.  Any
ideas  and advise is appreciated.
