What I like about the hanging filter the most is that I can fill it with 
oil before installing it, which gets the oil pressure up sooner on 
startup.  My '69 B had the inverted cartridge filter originally. The 
adapter had its own drain plug, accessible from below, so the filter 
housing could be drained before removing the housing.  Gotta face facts 
though; changing oil is messy. :-(

I checked my engine.  The starter does extend slightly into the space 
directly below the filter adapter mounting boss.  I'm not sure the 
spin-on adapters I was going on about are OEM parts.  Anyone know for sure?
