So called 'laser' devices may well have a small red spot to show where =
it is pointing, but the measurement area is much wider than that as the =
sensed area is cone-shaped i.e. it gets wider the further out you go in =
some case by as much as 2:1.  The smaller the physical object that you =
want to measure the closer you have to be or it averages cooler areas =
around it.  Yes I know an engine is pretty big, but it isn't all at the =
same temperature.  For the thermostat elbow for example it has to be =
almost touching.

More for running hot than anything else but yes measuring various areas =
over the surface of the rad will show up problems with flow rate, =
partially blocked core where the cause is insufficient cooling, or that =
the engine is producing more than it should.
