I have the resto packet for the 53 model year and this # appears to be a 216
engine #. the "L" is the model year, "B" is the engine type (216) and "A"
indicates
it was built at the Flint plant, a "M" would have indicated the Tonawanda plant,
and all engines were numbered in series beginning with 1001.
It appears the engine # was used on a title at some point in it's life. The
VIN # should start with H (3100 truck) then 53 (year) then a alpha char for
the plant it was built at and the SN beginning at 1001.
Hope that helps.
