Water in the transmission is a bad thing.
Does this truck run? Have you been able to drive it? I'm wondering how the
water got in there or if its been in there very long.
If the bearings, races, synchros are rusted you will have junk inside the
transmission that could cause it to fail going down the road. That's an
exciting experience, I once had a transmission fail going down the highway.
Suddenly the rear was sliding all over, and though I didn't hit anything it
was a frightening experience.
I don't know about the splines on the output shaft, but if they are damaged
it could be related to something floating about in the transmission and the
damaged splines could be what destroyed the driven gear. It could also be
that the remains of the driven gear are float around inside, and even though
they may not be made of steel those pieces could cause trouble.
I think I'd be looking for a new transmission.

Worked on the truck, removed the speedometer unit from the transmission.
With further investigation, here's my conclusion and next question. The
part that the gear slips onto, was frozen, and has since been "unfrozen" and
now rotates freely with the cable in...but there is no gear, it's missing.
I can see some splines where the gear is supposed to slip on...
question 1: how do i determine which gear I need...the books don't go into
detail just call it the "driven gear"
question 2: The splines don't look too good, can these be repaired, cleaned
up, made deeper? or if there is not enough grip left on the splines, can I
buy this speedo part new or is it a junkyard find?
Wayne has the picture of this part he'll be forwarding to the list, Part A
being where the cable enters and Part B being the part that spins but is
missing the gear.
Side question: Noticed that the transmission contains water, any other
suggestions/requirements other than draining and refilling the transmission.
