Years ago I sold a product called "Dark Magic" made by a company called "The
Wax Shop." It's a non-abrasive carnuba wax-based polish made for dark colored
cars that removes oxidization without removing the paint that lies under all
that crud. I've seen a lot of non-abrasive cleaners and polishing compounds
come and go, and all of them leave a half-assed haze and lots of swirl marks
behind them. Not so with Dark Magic. A dot or two on a rag and a bit of rubbing
(and I don't mean hard rubbing either) by hand and you won't believe your eyes.
It won't work on metallic paints with a half-gone clearcoat, but then again
nothing will. Still, oxidized red and black paint come to life after just one
application of this stuff. You don't need any power equipment or talent with
polishing machines to achieve amazing results. Just use a soft rag (I use old
flannel diapers) and make sure to wash and dry the rags to ensure there's
nothing on them that'll scratch the paint. Use just a little at first until you
learn the stuff, and rub the paint as if you were lust waxing the car.
At that time Wax Shop products were sold only via MLM - like Amway products.
The Wax Shop is still in business, and they now sell only through retail
outlets, and Dark Magic is now called "Pre-wax Cleaner." It's a bit pricy
($14.99
for a 14oz bottle) but you won't need much to do a car. In fact, if you follow
the instructions, you can do 2 vehicles with a 14 oz bottle. Follow it up with
their liquid carnuba wax (Super Glaze) and the shine will blind you. I order
mine through my local Car Quest, and even 20 years later, I still swear by the
stuff.

I have seen some of the old "red" factory finishes turn a "chalky pink" over
time. Pigments change color, ozone depletion, Russki atom bomb
testing.....whatever the reason. Take some mild rubbing compound, and by hand,
rub like
applying paste wax. Wipe off the film, and you may see some of the original
color
come to view (if there is any left under the chalky film). Hope it works for
you.
