  I think belt drive is better...Belt drive saws are generally quieter,
could be because of better quality or because of the drive type I dont know,
but they are quieter.  
  Work wise, they vibrate less and leave a cleaner cut and are nicer to use
without vibration.  Again that could be because the direct drives I have
used were cheap and the belt ones I have used were all Unisaw's.
