Seeing how my original question about thoughts on the Mobil 1 synthetic
fiber oil filters has evolved into discussion on whether or not there is
a benefit to using synthetic oil, I'll relay some comments.

We've had many cars since 1970 lasting over 100K mi. using regular
10W-40 changed every 5K with the filter also. Switched over in '93 to
Castrol Syntec 5W-50. Did not notice much difference in power or gas
mileage, no change in what little oil consumption or leakage existed
either. However, I have noticed a difference in the condition of the
oils at the end of 5K mi. The synthetic is still viscous and slippery
while the natural seemed to be somewhat broken down and watery. This is
DC climate temps, 20*F - 95*F, suburban stop/go and highway, fairly hard
driving with autocrossing and driver's schools thrown in.

I prefer to trust the durability of synthetic over natural under these
conditions. Mobil 1 has an excellent website at www.mobiloil.com? where
they explain the molecular differences between synthetic and natural
oil. I'll probably switch to Mobil 1 soon. Besides, DIY synthetic
still costs less than regular oil at Jiffy Lube.
