     This year I insulated walls and ceiling and covered everything with 
     1/4" plywood  painted white over light gray.  The white ceilings and 
     walls have tripled the amount of light in the shop.  the only drawback 
     is that you can see the accumulated dirt and dust much clearer now

I don't have it at work today, but there is a large reference tome
used by architects that talks about *everything* involved in building
structures. Expensive, but wonderful. The chapter on lighting includes
some charts that give an idea about the relative brightness of
various paint schemes. If a room with four white walls, white floor and
white ceiling is 100, a dark ceiling (only) drops it to about
58, a dark floor (only) drops it to about 85, dark walls and dark 
ceiling (such as one would find in an unfinished garage) is
down to about 38... 

Paint those walls white, even if you're just painting the studs and
sheet!
