My dad's been looking at lifts for awhile, and at carlisle this year (Ford
Nats) there were a couple of lift vendors, and they had some pictures of
installs. The best one was a guy raised a section of his garage roof a foot
or two in the area needed for the lift, finish drywalled everything, added
neon lights and automotive prints, and it really looked classy. there were
also dormers, fully raised roof, all sorts of ideas.

What is really needed is a way to set the lift to stop at a certain point.
My dad could fit the lift in the garage and put 2 cars on (we'll one on top
, one under), but the top car would have to be inches away from the ceiling
to work, and there needs to be a way to set up the lift to stop before
ramming the car through the roof. If it were me I'd want 2 ways, one soft
stop, that stops the motor or something, and a hard stop, a metal oh shit
bar, that is sized so that it will physically stop the lift before ramming
said expensive car through roof.
The couple of vendors that I've seen haven't had any kind of stops, just run
it until your close to the roof.
I've thought that a real quick and dirty way is a moveable switch on one the
posts, connected to a power interupt. Set the switch at the right heigth,
and then just run the lift up until it stops, automagically. This could
also be usefull for automating the system, just hit the up button and walk away.

A couple of crazy ideas, one of the cars my dad has is a convertable, to
gain more space he's thought of just notching the drywall between studs and
then parking the car in the right space and with the top down (i'd still
cover the interior of the car, but hey that's just me), and the windshield
up into the ceiling cutout. Problem, studs run in the wrong direction (or
car needs to be parked in the wrong direction.
