A friend faced this problem lately: He'd bought a huge lathe from a scrap
yard to use for a contract machining operation. Must have been about a 5
hp motor Just before he spent a tremendous amount of money for 3 phase
service, he stumbled into a local electric motor rebuilder/guru who whipped
together a 3 phase conversion system for cheap. Find your local "guru"
and see what he thinks . . . at one hp, switching out the motor might be the
logical route.
