Thanks for the suggestions...  I tried the wd40, simply because I have a lot of 
it
sitting around at home.  I dunked the bits in some Friday night before retiring 
for
the evening.  Sat. morning, they still looked a bit crummy, but cleaned up with 
some
light swipes of a scotch-brite pad; it worked great!

I didn't try the other stuff, so I can't report on how well those worked...
