Merry Christmas all,
I was using this four day weekend for the long over due replacement of
the shocks on my '72 Datsun 240Z. Once the penetrating oil loosened
up the caps that hold the cartridges in, I had no problem with the
rears. When I got to the fronts I discovered the cartridges were
solidly rusted to the inside of the strut tubes. I've never seen this
before and I mean they are solid! I put them back together after
pouring a ton of penetrating oil in them.
This is my daily driver and only running car right now so downtime
is at a premium. Because of this I was leaving the struts on the car
and leaning them out the wheel wells which I've done in the past.
My only idea at the moment is to fabricate an adapter for my slide
hammer to screw on to the top the piston shaft and give it a couple of
whacks. Any danger in doing that? I'd appreciate any other ideas or
words from experience. I really prefer not to have to pull them off
the car if at all possible.
