As in almost all engineering problems. The answer is, "it depends." In
this case Conrad already indicated that he was willing to give up some
access on the sides to gain headroom in the middle.
So from a deflection standpoint, thicker in the middle is more efficient
use of steel. For Conrad's case the thicker ends will resist bending,
just not as efficiently.
