I'm also getting ready to add some serious lighting to the garage/shop that
came with the
house I bought earlier this year. I've just about settled on getting the
high-output (HO)
fluorescent lighting.
In my previous place I used 2-bulb 4-foot fixtures spaced around the room.
After
hitting 40 a few years ago, I found that my favorite way to look into small
recesses
and to try to read old rubbed-down, tiny-font stamped parts was to go right
out into
direct sunlight. But since I kept my day job, it isn't often daylight when
I'm out
there working. So those HO lights are looking very attractive to me now.
The added benefit of the HO lights is that they are designed for use in
commercial
walk-in freezers; i.e. they work at low temperature.
Our local Lowe's and Home Depot stores have a good supply of 8-ft fixtures
and bulbs.
I found a guy in the lighting dept. at Home Depot who really knows his stuff
and he's
been a real help in putting it together. The 8-ft HO fixtures are running
me $45 each.
The bulbs run $5 to $7 each, but be sure to look at the output (lumens), not
the
energy consumed (watts). There are quite a few choices. If you want the
best
efficiency, go for the higest output per unit power consumed.
