My wife wants me to build a old fashion porch out our back door. We don't
want a 'Deck' but rather a porch complete with rails and old type trim.
Here's my problem, I can find tons of articles on building a deck but can't
find anything on building a porch. I've pretty much figured out everything
except how to fasten the rail posts to the porch floor.
I'm planning on building it in two stages, foundation, floor and rails and
next year add the roof.
( I know that makes it a deck for now ). Two of the rail posts will be
against the house so that's not a problem. Its the two outer corner posts
and the posts either side of the centered stairs that I need to fasten down
solid to the floor. Once the roof is done the corner posts will have the
roof to hold them solid but we'd like to have the posts either side of the
stairs remain short and not go all the way to the roof.
Any suggestions out there? Any recommendations as to a good book ?
Here's a attempt at a diagram
