If a "boil-out" is precluded, I'd try to buy some time at a steam-cleaner .
. I did one once by leaving live steam flowing up into the filler neck of an
upside-down tank . . it took an hour . . don't use normal steam-cleaner soap
for fear of paint damage.  The other remedy I've heard was a cycle tank and
the owner part-filled it with carburetor cleaner and a couple of pounds of
nuts and bolts . . He left it in the bed of his truck a couple of weeks and
it came clean enough to use from the sloshing action.  Good luck.
