I replaced the metal tubes with the rubber whips and new couplers on both air 
powered grease guns a few years ago and have had no
problems with either of them.

Do not throw the metal pipe away. Leave the zerk coupler on the end of the 
pipe, get a regular hardware store 1/8in pipe coupling,
screw it on the other end of the pipe, and then get a 1/8in pipe thread grease 
zerk to go in the pipe coupling. Makes a great
solid extension when your hand will not fit into a spot to properly seat the 
coupler on the end of the rubber hose - like a John
Deere garden tractor universal joint or a wood chipper pillow block bushing or 
a - fill in the name of the regular maintenance
zerk that you can see but can not actually get to because somebody thought it 
would be fun to put a %$#@! zerk in that particular
%$#@! location ...

Sorry, a flash back to a bad maintenance moment. The calm-yourself drugs are 
kicking in now.
