Glue for side molding

The rubber side molding on my son's '95 VW GTI has fallen off (for the
second time).  A year or so ago, when it started to come loose the last
time, we cleaned the dirt and wax off of the metal surface with solvent and
used some double sided tape from 3M which we bought at an autobody supply
store.  Is there any better way to do this?
