To the OP on this topic...
If the current trans isn't working, why not take it out and take it apart?
If it looks like something you can rebuild, then buy the parts and do it.
If it doesn't look like something you can rebuild, put everything in a box
and take it to a rebuild shop (optionally putting it back together first,
so that you don't scare the guy).
That way you don't commit the money for the rebuild kit before you're
comfortable that you'll be able to do it.
