They can be. Depends on the maker of the fittings.
Many more things interchange unofficially, if you're handy and are willing
to accept the risk. Just as there's nothing wrong with a splice made from
two hose clamps and a bicycle innertube, as long as you understand what
you've done and it's limitations.
