Air-cooled VW busses used this type of set up. They put the 
condenser/fan assemblies (2), right in front of the rear axles. The 
Porsche 914s cut out the bottom of the spare tire well and put the 
condenser in place of the spare tire.  Both of them has sheet metal 
louvers under them to keep stones from hitting the coils.
