Turn on the Ignition, unplug the wires on the brake switch stick um
together.  If the brake lights come on then it must be the switch or
contacts.  Clean the contacts with somthing, somthing with phosphoric
acid in is quite good.  Flux dosent work unless you can get it hot.  
Try it again. 

The brake lights work like this.  Earths s(common with sidelights so you
know it's working) to the lights  to one common wire to the front to the
brake switch, to the igintion.  

Bulb with a wire atached would be the next bit.
