I concur with Huw.  I lived there all of my life before joining the Air Force
and ending up in Hawaii.  101 is absolutely beautiful.  Its a very twisty road
with a few up and down hills with breathtaking cliffs at the tops.  I would be
sure your steering and brakes are up to par and not worry about the OD.  There
are precious few places you can even get up to the 55 MPH speed limit.  If you
take I-5 then cut over to 101 you may wish you had OD on the I-5 part, but 101
by its self you wont need it.

Have a great trip and enjoy the scenery!  I drove up 101 (from LA to Portland)
about a year ago.  Camping all the way with my family and a dog.  What fun.
It took about 10 days, but we were in no hurry.
