Wow, what a list of suggestions. I should have guessed that garage working
was a favorite winter hobby for TR Listers etc.
The good news is that I did get my 12,000 btu kerosene heater running
properly and it does get the place warm. Adding a 1500w cube heater helps
further. FYI, the heat loss seems to be about 4 deg/hr with a temp.
differential of 60 deg. The 1500 w heater kept the garage above freezing
overnight. This means the tools are not frozen and neither is the car.
The best suggestion came from Dave Massey who suggested a discarded clothes
dryer! Fantastic idea, if only I had the room. But it jives with the btu's
I'll need and I suspect a 4800w construction heater (Thanks Trevor B) will
do the job. Gas would be nice but pricey and not warranted in such a small
space.
A side note to the "unvented 100,000 btu unit story" (author unknown)...
years ago I painted my ice racer in an UNHEATED double garage with the same
kerosine heater and a 300,000 btu propane unit. It was about -35 and
nothing would warm that place up. While I didn't pass out, apparently I
didn;t look so hot and had no strength or coordination. Yup CO poisoning.
Since that day I have had a problem with kerosene heaters, since it was the
lingering smell of diesel being burnt (smells tha same anyway) that I still
to this day cannot stand......geez, wonder why I don;t drive a turbodiesel
car? I thought it was performance related!
