Thanks to everyone who sent replies to this. Since just about everyone
thought that any alternator should be ok, I went down there over the
weekend to check it out, and guess what? It fitted! No problems
whatsoever (except for a rusty bolt which took a bit of persuasion to
get out). Seems like this guy just didn't know what he was talking
about.
So I'm going back there tonight was a suitcase full of used bank notes
to pick the car up - and by this time tomorrow I should be the proud
owner of my first ever Spitfire!
