Once my speedo was flaky, working one day and not the next.
It turned out that the flex cable was not getting turned at all by the gear in 
the tranny.
The fitting at the end of the cable was too small, and was simply slipping in
the slot in the gear.  Obviously the cause was a off-spec aftermarket cable
installed by some DPO.  I got a new cable from TRF and it has worked
ever since.
