Greetings:
I believe you have one or more of three problems:
1) Shifter mechanism needs adjustment. You can test for this by removing top
cover extension and manually trying to engage reverse gear. If this is the
problem you'll need to fix extension linkage. This will be the easiest fix.
2) Reverse gear is shot. Believe it or not, this can be done with the
transmission in place. You do have to remove the rear alloy extension. The
reverse gear can then be extracted, a new one installed, and things put back
together.
3) The laygear is shot. This is a headache. Not only are they expensive,
they usually cost more than a used tranny. You must also remove the tranny
and fully dismantle it to replace the laygear.
