Jeff,

  Most of the manuals will say around 750 + or - 100 rpm.  However, like you
point out, below 850 the ign. light comes on.  I usually set my cars to
idle at 1,000 even.  The ign. light will NOT come on, even with the headlight
and heater blower on, and it's a lot easier to get the car to pull from a
dead stop.
