While my advice is worth about $0.02 or less, this is what I think:
If it's a rust-free body and the overdrive works, that's probably not a
terribly high price. That is, if you're living in a salt-free state. In
looking back at the mistakes I've made buying Spits, not checking the
floorboards for tinworm was the biggest. Likewise, in my case, the
condition of the brake master cylinder is important 'cause of the high
replacement cost.
Engines and carbs, or parts available from parts cars, in my mind, are of
lesser importance. For instance I have three extra engines for my Spit and
other spares, in case something goes boom.
