Richard, I remember as well. Used to have them on the old Austin A40, 1100 etc. 
before they made them standard. Used to be one that was a plastic sheet that 
literaly just trapped air and acted as an insulated section. An old section of 
soft top window would almost be the same if you could get a nice seal and make 
it fit without falling away from the glass. Also I remember you used to be able 
to buy repair liquid for the electric ones. Almost could paint your own heating 
elements on and connect it up with a connector (for when you take off the hard 
top), timer, warning light and switch. Now that would be cool (or hot as the 
case may be).
