I've done this several times, since the vinyl boot on my armrest won't
slide over it, so I need to remove the plastic grip every time I want to
adjust the front handbrake cable.

I always use the wife's hairdryer for heating the grip very gently. That
softens it up and expands it enough to slide it off the metal assembly
quite easily.
