I know you've been having a time dealing with the vibration in your Spitfire,
and I don't know if you've gotten it resolved yet or not. Came across one
recently that I thought I'd pass on to you that might help.

Did a clutch job on the truck a little while ago. Lost some oil out of the
tailshaft of the transmission, but not enough to worry about. Finished the job
up with no problems.

After a few days, the truck started to vibrate at about 2k rpm. Then it gave a
nice bang, and started to vibrate hard at 2k. Damn! this feels just like a
blew a bearing on the input shaft. Checked the oil level, and I'm nearly a
quart low in the gearbox. Double damn, didn't know I'd lost that much oil.

Yep, it's vibrating strongly at 2k rpm, every gear but 4th and 5th, when I'm
locked directly up. Press the clutch pedal and goes away. Shudders as I
engage the clutch. It's gotta be either the input shaft, or maybe the clutch,
but I screwed up.

But the gearbox isn't hot at all. Nor is the shifter. And the vibration
doesn't quite seem to feel right in the stick.

Went under it again, hoping I'd find something other then a tranny repair job,
and I did.

A u-joint in the driveshaft had let go. Badly worn. Needle bearings
completely missing from one cup, and the whole unit beating itself to death.
Replaced the u-joint and the truck is happy, no more rpm related vibration or
rough clutch engagement.

I can't explain why it, but that's the story. Maybe it'll help you chase yours
down. Might help some others chasing vibratinos as well.

I plan to tuck it away in the memory archive until I forget it. :-)
