Ken,

I used a Rimmers re-conditioned unit when I replaced my gearbox (the old one
was jumping out of reverse, had 110,000 miles on it, and I was replacing a
broken clutch anyway so it seemed like a good opportunity!). So far it has
covered around 30,000 miles in 2 years without problems. It has always
seemed a little stiff getting into some gears (2nd mainly), but then I
haven't tried too many different old gearboxes to know whether this is
typical - the comparison is against much more modern cars.

Since Daffy was (at the time) my only car I couldn't afford to have her out
of use while I re-built the box myself, which is why I bought an
off-the-shelf re-con unit.

One note - get everything you can off the old box, because there is stuff
that isn't included automatically on the new box. I handed my old box over
when I picked up the new one, and it was only when I got home that I
discovered that I should have removed the electrical switch for the
reversing light, as it wasn't on the new box. You also need to keep the top
cover, as far as I can remember. There may be other stuff that has slipped
my memory...

Richard
