Wires

I am in the process of seperating the body from the frame, on my '77 and my
'73. The gas tank has a black wire to the top and a green, with black
stripe, wire to the bottom, of the gauge mechanism. Are two wire components
dependent on configuration?
Most of the connections are fit specific or color matched.
