Believe me when I say this one is not going to work, at least not as a fuel 
tank sender.  Maybe as a knockoff hammer.  The entire end is one big blob of 
something that looks like calcium that is hard as a rock. Chipped part of it 
off and part of the metal housing came with it.

Nope! Never had one go bad. Check electrical conections & fuse block.
