You messed with cooling and now charging isn't behaving.
Since one thing that the cooling system and the charging system have in common
is the belt, have you looked at that?
Is the generator turning? is the belt loose?
if there was no generator output (i.e. the belt isn't turning it) the drain
would be higher at higher RPM as you describe.

Okay listers....here's a stumper for you.

LUCAS strikes again:

After replacing the water pump and hoses, and rebuilding the radiator on my
friend Steve's 68 Sprite MkIV last week, We get it all together only to find
that upon starting, the generator light stays on.

Actually, the symptoms are a little wierder than that. When the engine revs
up, around 3-4000 the light gets brighter, and at idle, sometimes the light
goes out. We've replaced the voltage regulator with the one from my car (I
did Frank's alternator conversion a couple of weeks ago), and swapped
generators too. No change in indicator status. We've checked the fuses, and
cleaned all the contacts on the generator and voltage regulator.

The Bentley manual describes a "bad field coil" as manifesting this symptom.
 Is this easily checked?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks.
