I suspect that it was just marginally off to begin with, but as you put
some miles on it the distributor cap posts started to corrode a tiny bit
and the rotor tip did also, creating slight resistance and then some
cross firing.  With everthing just right with the points setup, you can
tolerate this small corrosion and subsequent increase in resistance.  I
have an Allison unit in my daily driver Morris that gave me this problem
early on until I figured it out and rotated the assembly on the breaker
plate so the rotor was in the correct location in relation to the posts
in the cap.  That was over 250,000 miles ago.  Have never needed to set
the timing since.  Try that with points.  BTW, the car now has 560,000
miles on it.
