I'll add a little bit to my last post to you.

A common effect of a burnt/open/misadjusted intake valve is to allow the
explosion in the combustion chamber to fire partially out the intake
manifold. It will do it all the time, under light or heavy throttle.
When it discharges out the intake manifold it momentarily stops all the
fuel/air mass going into the engine and sends it back out through the
carb throat. When the non offending cylinders are working right on the
rest of the cycle, the air/fuel mix gets going in the right direction
again, only to have it reversed again. The car usually runs sorta
crappy, in this process too.

Check to see that all the intakes valve are adjusted properly. Then try
a leak down test. If it's an intake valve, it will hiss through the carb
throat. This is pretty definitive as to a leaky intake valve. It could
be burned, bent, or just plain poor head work will cause this.

Good luck.
