the saab group just thoroughly kicked this one silly. as i understand
it(uh-oh here we go) petroleum products tend to swell seals a bit.
synthetic products do not. when going with a new engine,trans or rear you
have a definite choice to use what ever the popular lubricant is at the time
with little to no adverse reactions. but as soon as you decide to change
to the more modern lubricant in a used assembly it leaks like no one would
believe. the saab guys were thrashing using synthetic oil in their
transaxles. the biggest comment was excessive leakage(in used known good
assemblies with out renewing the seals). be carefull, when in a vehicles
life you choose to attempt a change. the coeficiant of drag might be
grately reduced but the amount lost due to leakage will certainly result in
fewer rust spots on the bottom of your car. not to mention the added
expense of the synthetic product over time too. modern fluids do have their
place in todays market it is up to the consumer to be educated enough to
know what will work in wich aplication, and it's consiquences. it is the
life blood of your LBC! be carefull what you feed it. chuck.
