Glen:

I can not definitively answer your question, but my '79 of course has a 
crossflow and it not only runs cool as a cucumber, but I recently had to put 
a 195 degree thermostat in it to get the engine to heat up above "c".  I am 
rebuilding a '67 Sprite and now plan to put the crossflow out of my '73 parts 
car into it.  Hope this helps.    Weigh it against other responses you will 
get on this topic.
