Because the Raydots were too expensive and because I was trying to be
"period correct", I installed two bullet mirrors on my ' 67 Midget race car
when I built it about ten years ago. Since I have no windows to worry
about, I fabricated a small sheet metal bracket that is riveted to the
window slot covers on the top of the doors. This puts the mirror base
further outboard, parallel to the ground, and enhances the angle of
visibility. If they had been mounted to the door or the little vertical
area at the top of the door, they wouldn't work as well. When I first
started racing I was paranoid about holding up overtaking drivers or doing
something dangerous by my not seeing someone behind me. I bought two
stick-on, convex mirrors at Pep Boys that go over the flat glass of the
bullet mirrors, giving me a tremendous field of vision. I don't need to
see any details, only that there is something or somebody within the cone
of visibility. Just to be sure, I also mounted an aftermarket windshield
mounted rear view mirror in the normal place on top of the dash. No one
sneaks up on me now!
