Get another ball. They are the same as the ball bearings in Mini driveshaft
couplings. Take a long, soft rod, a large hammer and.....beat the crap out
of the ball into the socket. So long as you don't crack the block, you
should end up with a perfect mating surface between the block and your new
ball. Been there, done that, met it on the way back etc. etc.
Chances are that the oil pump is crapped out and could do with replacing
with a decent one from a precision company like Minispares UK. The
tolerance on new pumps is unfortunately too often beyond max limits before
you even run the engine. I sent 3 back to a Rover dealership before finding
Minispares. Don't forget to shorten the spring to the correct length so
that the total of spring+ball = spring +plunger. Its in that Vizard book
(Available on E-bay? <g>) Didn't notice any particular difference to the
car but the feel-good factor of spending an afternoon in oil and dust was
worth the cost of a ball bearing.
