This is exactly the symptoms that I suffered through for a year with my 948.
Never found an answer. I finally solved the problem by installing another
engine. I swapped every component on the car plus I tried every combination
of components. I swapped carbs, distributors, fuel pumps, gas tanks, fuel
lines, rockers, pushrods, alternators/generators (it started when I was
running a generator), headers, etc., etc., etc.
Hopefully your problem will be easier to track down.
If you find an answer I would sure like to hear about it.
