Along these lines, and Brad's comment about Autozone not being helpful, I
recently had some starter problems. Eventually I got my original starter
rebuilt by a local auto/electrical shop. (With Peter C.'s help, of course.
Thanks Peter!)
This shop has been in business in Jenkintown, PA since cars had cranks! The
new owner bought the shop from the guy I used to take my electrical problems
to back in the '60s. This kind of place is a JEWEL to find!
He has a test bench that is made out of wood, with brass knife switches and
big dials! He told me that he just rebuilt the test bench, and that it was
made in 1938.
He rebuilt my starter so it was ready the next day. The thing looks (and
works) like new. It was a little expensive, but I know the job was done
right. I had bought a rebuilt starter from carparts.com for $40 and that was
a mistake. The shop charged me $90 to rebuild my old starter, and I am happy
with that price.
