Mike they are all interchangable. Minor differences in the bend, length,
and the later have the rubber break away but they all fit either tranny.
Like Chuck said, did they chrome the ball? Or do you have something
lodged in the tranny where the shifter goes?
You are using the early single cover? Not the 2 piece job, right?
