an occasional coolingsystem flush is not a bad thing! rust scale and sludge
settles in the engine block slowly over time building up into a relativly
solid layer of sludge. this of course occupies the lower section of the
engine block's cooling jacket reducing efficiency of the system. the sludge
acts like a heat sink and retains heat rather than dispersing it. if you
see a lot of scale in the cylinder head it is safe to believe that the same
applies to the rest of the entire system. garden hose flushing will begin
to clear the most recent layer. but chemical cooling system flush's will
begin to clean out the other stuff that has collected over time.

on the race car i worked on a long time ago we had made a hose fitting
attached to a steel plate that attached to the head in place of theheater
controll . routed the hose over and around the head and attached it to the
tube coming back from the lower rad. hose to provide coolant circulation in
the rear of the head. it reduced the head temp significantly .

on the subject of cooling systems remember a car cools more efficiently with
a thermosat than without one! since thermostats come in 160, 180, and 190
degree incriments, the chances of having the wrong thermostat for your
climate or time of year is very real. the old 1950's addage of removing a
thermostat is not a good thing to experiment with on an lbc! not only do
they regulate temperature but also (when open) regulate flow in the system.

excessive timing advance can be an added culprit too. in an effort to get
all you can from your lbc advancing timing is not a bad idea untill it gets
real hot outside and when ambient temps rise and engine temps rise heat
exchangers work overtime and have a difficult time disposing ofheat as
rapidly as the engine can produce heat. be carefull with agressivly
advanced timing in hot weather.

chuck.
just some mixed thoughts on warm weather hot running problems.
from the master of mixed up thought?
